Sustainable development

The key to leadership is to take responsibility for one's actions. At Galderma we are responsible for meeting the dermatological needs of the present without compromising the planet for future generations. Dermatology company Galderma's manufacturing processes are actively concentrated on the following as well as many other sustainable development commitments: reducing greenhouse gas emissions, processing waste and eco-design.

When it comes to the environment, North America is often accused of having a poor track record. But at Galderma’s Canadian Baie d’Urfé plant, a proactive sustainable development program is well under way and has already made some considerable achievements aiming at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In 2008, the plant installed solar panels to take advantage of Canada’s winter sunshine to warm the outside air that is used to ventilate site facilities. In addition, an electric steam boiler is online to supplement the Canadian plant’s energy requirements, enabling it to further reduce GHG emissions by 500 metric tons. Energy savings have also been made in the manufacturing process.


Active Employee Involvement

Dermatology company Galderma's Baie d’Urfé plant is also tackling the issue of waste, starting with production by-products. To cut down on the number of cardboard boxes, empty Cetaphil bottles are now delivered to the plant on plastic-wrapped pallets, saving over 110 metric tons of cardboard each year. Employees are actively involved in efforts to reduce and manage waste more effectively.
Annual collection campaigns for hazardous waste and a car-sharing scheme actively involve Galderma’s employees and encourage their commitment to protect the environment.
These concrete achievements have already earned the Baie d’Urfé plant ISO 14001 certification.

Eco-Design in Packaging

Eco-design involves taking environmental factors into account in the earliest design phase. For packaging, this means assessing the ecological impact of a dermatological solution throughout its lifecycle — from initial idea through to recycling. The Alby-sur-Chéran and Baie d’Urfé plants are now starting to apply this approach. By working with the suppliers in Alby-sur-Chéran to reduce the weight of a range of bottles, the total mass was reduced by eight percent, which amounts to savings of six metric tons of plastic per year. Eco-design is now applied systematically to all packaging development. Environmental criteria are also added to the purchasing matrices, next to traditional criteria such as cost, quality, technical compliance with customer specifications and supplier reliability.

Green electricity

The Q-Med, a Galderma division site in Uppsala, Sweden, use thermal heat and heat pumps for heating and cooling the main part of the buildings. Large parts of the facility are heated by ground source heating and all electricity used is environmentally declared hydropower.
The first installation of heat pumps in 2004 gave a reduction of carbon footprint by 200 tons per year.
Today 56% of the building area is heated and cooled by thermal energy.
In 2011 the Uppsala production site set up a pilot test to replace halogen bulbs lamp with LED lighting. The energy consumption was reduced by more than 90% and the LED bulbs last 5 times longer than Halogen.

Industrial Certification: Essential Standards

Quality and safety are key to success. Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) are the base of all site operations. Quality Assurance validates all the sites' manufacturing processes and audits subcontractors and suppliers. To meet dermatology company Galderma’s demanding and high quality standards, production teams respect best practice standards as defined by national health authorities in France (Afssaps), the United States (FDA), in Brazil (ANVISA), Canada (Canada Health) and several world wide health authorities.

In addition, regarding environment protection and employees Safety, Alby-sur-Chéran, Baie d'Urfé and Uppsala are certified ISO 14001 (environmental standard), and their plant safety management systems have OHSAS 18001 certification. The most recent certification, ISO 13485, covers medical devices. All sites follow the local regulations.

The investment project will optimise all aspects of plant operation to improve output capacity, quality, as well as environmental and safety performance, while at the same time making the work environment more pleasant.


Galderma's production sites have been certified for a number of years. What do these standards mean?

ISO 14001 is a standard for environmental management systems. It was first introduced in 1996, with the aim of reducing the environmental footprint of an industrial facility while constantly improving its environmental performance. ISO 14001 is the benchmark standard. It has 18 specific requirements, divided into six areas: general requirements (the facility's environmental aims); environmental policy; planning; implementation; regulation and corrective actions; and management review.

Created in 1990, the OHSAS 18001 standard enjoys global recognition. It was originally British, and the acronym stands for "Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series". This standard specifies management rules to ensure occupational health and safety within a company.

The ISO 13485 standard specifies the requirements of quality management systems for medical devices. It is not obligatory for marketing medical products, but it nonetheless demonstrates that the company has followed procedures recognised by an independent body which audits it regularly. Another benefit is that this certification simplifies CE labeling for the company's products.
