Non Melanoma Skin Cancers

Non Melanoma Skin Cancers are also referred to as Actinic Keratosis and Basal Cell carcinomas.

Actinic Keratosis (AK) refers to precancerous lesions, which are the areas of skin that have been damaged by overexposure to sunlight, causing the skin cells to grow at an abnormally fast rate.

AK usually appear on the face, arms and hands, and are usually reddish-brown in colour and have a rough, warty surface. It is extremely important they are treated quickly, before they lead to more serious conditions.

Basal Cell Carcinomas (BCCs) are a type of skin cancer that generally takes the form of either a single bump or a series of small flat bumps. Although it is rare for BCCs to spread to other parts of the body, early treatment is very important.

Surgery and cryotherapy and topical creams have been the mainstay of the treatments. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is the modern treatment for certain types of non-melanoma skin cancer.

PDT is a very different approach to the treatment of these types of lesions than the more conventional approaches such as cryotherapy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy or indeed surgery. PDT uses the chemical reaction between light and a light-activated drug to destroy the tumour cells.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a modern treatment for certain types of precancerous lesions as well as non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs). The treatment consists of applying a specific cream to the skin lesion and 3 hours later, shining a pure red light on it. The pure light is a weak harmless light. Only where the two are combined will they treat the abnormal area of your skin.

PDT offers a non surgical alternative treatment for skin lesions. The number of PDT treatments will be dependent on the type of lesion that is being treated. Actinic Keratoses requires a single treatment of PDT and Basal cell carcinomas and Bowens disease require two treatments one week apart.
